During the lockdown, self-care is more important than ever. The COVID-19 crisis can affect your physical and mental wellbeing far beyond directly-related symptoms. You may notice that you’re not sleeping as well as you once were. Perhaps you’ve noticed that your skin is looking dull or that you’re experience moments of anxiety.
We thought we would share some Lockdown Self Care Tips From A Spa Professional. Here, Sarah Werkhoven, Spa Manager at The Spa At Nita Lake Lodge, shares her advice on maintaining optimum health during the Coronavirus pandemic and highlights some key products that you can utilize, too.
Staying Active (Whilst Being Respectful Of Social Distancing Guidelines)
My first lockdown self-care tip is physical activity. That could be getting out for a run or a bike ride, for example, in the beautiful fresh air. Staying active and getting outdoors helps to get your circulation going and encourages the lymphatic system to engage and detoxify the body.
Physical activity also stimulates the release of serotonin (along with other feel-good hormones), which boosts your mood and overall sense of well-being. Studies prove that fresh air and sunlight can also have a positive impact on your sleep health.
To combat muscle soreness after an activity, my go-to is the Nita Signature Muscle Gel. It’s a supremely relaxing icy-hot sensation created by cooling menthol and warming capsicum and camphor oil. I love it as part of a massage experience or simply for sore muscles post-gym. As well as being vegan and certified organic, it’s balanced for the skin’s pH (between 4.2 to 5.8).
Lockdown Self-care – Staying Motivated
Needing motivation before your activity? I love Ila’s Body Oil for Vital energy! – One of The Spa’s most legendary products, beloved by beauty editors and tired mothers alike.
Think of this as your daily antidote to lethargy. Deeply nourishing, the uplifting blend of wild-crafted Juniper Berry, Rose Geranium and Rosehip Seed Oil not only smells exquisite but works to combat stress and revitalises the body’s bio-energy field, leaving you better prepared for whatever life may throw at you.
My skin feels fortified and protected, my spirits are lifted, and my heart is instantly recharged.
Here’s Why You’ll Love It:
- The blend of essential oils cleanses and energises the body, removes toxins, restores energy to the cells and – breaking news – reduces cellulite.
- Argan, Almond, and Rosehip Seed Oils are rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids that penetrate the deep tissues and stimulate circulation.
- Wild-harvested Juniper Berry cleanses and purifies
- Rose Geranium and Lavender stimulate the lymphatic system
Pamper Yourself With An At-home Champagne Pedicure!
Grab your favourite glass of bubbles and relax in your favourite spot.
I start off by soaking my feet in a bowl or bath with a delicious Lavender bubble bath by Carina Organics. I then use Ila’s Body Scrub for Energizing & Detoxifying (Ideal for when you’re feeling run down or sluggish).
I find it to be deeply moisturizing and the high mineral content is intended to detoxify and stimulate circulation, banishing dry, rough and congested skin.
Here’s Why You’ll Love It:
- Alpine Lavender with geranium and lemongrass stimulates the circulation and boosts the immune system
- Wild organic Juniper Berry cleanses negativity, stimulates circulation and helps eliminate cellulite
- Argan and Rosehip Seed Oil nourish the deepest layers of the skin.
I like to finish off a pedicure with Ila’s Body Balm for Feeding the Skin. It’s rich in omega 3, 6 and 9 which are essential fatty acids that restore suppleness, uplift the senses and reveal a softer, brighter texture.
You need a little elbow grease to warm and soften it, but – wow – when it is rubbed in, the skin feels so incredibly deeply nourished and protected. A panacea for modern times, ila call this their “miracle balm” and it’s easy to see why!
The Self-care Classic – A Bath And A Face Mask
I’m sure we’re all familiar with this wellbeing ritual. But it’s worth highlighting it as a simple way to enjoy some lockdown self-care too! Here’s what I focus on for an effective destress:
The right soothing melodies can help melt away stress and make you feel more removed from reality. If you live with others, music can drown out household sounds too, which may otherwise be distracting. I love Ila’s Heart Of The Earth CD. The exquisite, angelic chanting immediately slows you down and soothes you on a deep internal level. Other easy-listening favourites of mine include the albums ‘Play’ by Moby, and ‘Simple Things’ by Zero 7.
I love a good incense and Ila do a really great Aroma Of Purity & Peace. The product is handcrafted in India with Sandalwood and Jasmine and is a joyful chemical-free fragrance that is hard to beat. It’s the perfect solution for stress, clearing away all negative energy and filling the room with a sense of peace. The fragrance is perfect – subtle yet effective.
I find that the products that you use in the bath can really make or break the experience. One of my favourite brands is Carina Organics. They’re local to us here in British Columbia and they use only 100% natural products. I recommend their Lavender-scented bubble bath, which uses the power of aromatherapy to soothe and relax.
Another great bath product is Ila’s Bath Salts for Cleansing – These miracle bath salts offer rich and healing detoxification to anyone who is tired or stressed. Ancient Himalayan salts infuse the body with 84 essential trace elements and minerals, strengthening your bio-energy field (aura), washing away the negative ions associated with computers and phones, stimulating circulation and leaving skin soft and thoroughly cleansed. A wonderful way to enjoy some lockdown self-care!
I honestly love Naturopathica’s White Tea Antioxidant Mask – It’s a creamy, nutrient-rich mask that blends detoxifying white tea, hydrating borage seed oil, and soothing aloe vera to hydrate, firm and replenishes devitalized skin. Plus, Rosemary Leaf Extract protects against environmental stressors. I find that a once-a-week application is enough to stay on top of my skin’s needs.
Lockdown Self-care – A DIY Facial
Missing the full spa experience? Here’s my routine for a DIY facial at home:
Step 1 – I cleanse my face with Aloe Cleansing Gel. It’s sulfate-free and perfect for all skin types.
Step 2 – Next I exfoliate. Naturopathica’s Cherry Enzyme Peel is my go-to. It smells good enough to eat!
Step 3 – Moisturize – Right now I’m using Beech Tree & Ginseng Daily Moisturizer. It visibly reduces the appearance of pesky fine lines and is antioxidant-rich.
Step 4 – SPF, SPF, SPF! – I go with Coola. It’s plant-based, cruelty-free, and at least 70% certified organic.
Disconnect From Technology
This is a tough one for many of us, I’m sure, but it’s important to allow yourself time to disconnect from screen time & social media feeds. It is great to stay socially connected however we need to focus on setting boundaries and allowing ourselves to have some time to meditate, read, practice yoga or whatever feeds your soul!
I love to paint and to encourage a sense of wellbeing I like to use The Spa’s Signature Sleep Blend. It’s available as a mini-roller and features lavender, cedarwood and ylang-ylang (among others). I find it’s great for calming, reducing feelings of tension, and creating a restful environment.
