Maskne is a real problem for many of us right now. In this post we’d love to talk about a couple of affordable treatment options in Whistler as well as some professional products and home remedies to attack the issue head-on.
We’d love to know about your experiences with Maskne. Please feel free to add your own advice and tips in the comments. If you have a specific question about maskne or skin treatments, post that in the comments, too, and we’ll aim to share a response from our talented estheticians with you.
What is Maskne?
Maskne is the term coined for acne breakouts caused as a result of mask-wearing. This is something that we’re all facing due to COVID-19. While the pandemic doesn’t appear to be disappearing any time soon, there is hope for your acne!
We tackle maskne armed with clean actives that help to balance the skin’s pH and products that won’t clog pores or lay heavy on the skin.
Professional Products – Naturopathica
Naturopathica Aloe Cleansing Gel is great because it’s calming for the skin. It’s foaming, sulfate-free gel clarifies, cleanses and protects. The vegan ingredients include aloe (a powerful hydrator), lavender (soothing and balancing), and coconut oil (a gentle cleanser that won’t dry the skin). Make it part of your daily routine to clear away grime.
Follow this up with Naturopathica Rosemary Oil-Reducing Moisturizer. This is a light, mattifying moisturizer that hydrates skin, absorbs oil and refines pores. Rosemary is known for its antiseptic properties while alpine willow refines the appearance of pores.
Professional Products – Alumier MD
We’re in love with Alumier’s Acne Clarifying Cleanser. Salicylic acid penetrates pores to help control acne pimples and allow skin to heal. Boswellia, honey and rice bran extract soothe and hydrate skin, leaving it fresh, supple and comfortable. We can’t believe the difference! This magic product is also paraben-free, sulfate-free, phthalate-free and animal cruelty-free!
For on-the-spot action (get it?!), we recommend Alumier Spot Clearing Lotion. Expect a potent acne spot treatment, which heals pimples quickly thanks to a fast-acting formulation of benzoyl peroxide and tea tree, as well as resveratrol to relieve redness and irritation. This is a targeted, effective treatment for maskne and is available to buy from The Spa At Nita Lake Lodge, Whistler Creekside.
Maskne – Home Remedies
In the fight against maskne, there are a couple of things that you can try at home. Firstly, make sure you’re checking off the basics:
- Are you drinking plenty of water?
- Getting the correct amount of sleep?
- Following a well-balanced diet?
- Allowing your skin to breathe between mask-wearing?
For an effective home remedy, look first to your fridge. Cucumbers are a great ingredient for a homemade mask. Make a paste by blending one small cucumber and 1 cup of oatmeal. Then mix 1 teaspoon of this paste with 1 teaspoon of yogurt and apply it to your face. Leave it on for 30 minutes, and then rinse. Cucumbers are anti-inflammatory and have skin soothing and hydrating benefits while oatmeal can help to soak up excess oil on the skin. Check out Everyday Health for other, easy-to-make face mask recipes.
Another easy option to add into your routine is spearmint tea. ‘A comforting cup of tea can work wonders for your skin, and spearmint tea is a science-backed sip proven to clear the skin’ writes Nutritious Life.
‘Out of whack hormones are at the root of acne, especially adult acne which appears along the jawline (exactly where maskne makes its debut). Drinking spearmint tea twice a day can significantly lower testosterone levels, thanks to it’s anti-androgenic effects. The mere act of drinking tea lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol, so it’ll ease the mind and the skin. Boil some to sip on during your skincare routine or while you watch The Queen’s Gambit’.
