Whistler is full of outside adventures, both big and small. From family fun to wild wilderness, there is something that everyone can call an adventure. While some activities may take a bit more courage than others, we have rounded up some of the best outside adventures to experience this summer in Whistler.
For those with a family that includes young children, the adventures may be smaller, but just as fun with these outdoor parks. Just steps away from Nita Lake Lodge is the Alpha Lake Playground. This playground features a swing set and a natural tree house with slides. If you venture into the village, hit up the Olympic Plaza Playground. Located steps away from the Marketplace Parking lot, this easily accessible playground has something for children of all ages. There are two separate tree house play structures, geared towards younger and older children with slides, swings and interactive art pieces. The central village location also means it is close proximity to shopping and coffee shops which will keep everyone in the family happy.
If you keep going north, past the Village, you will find the Meadow Park Sports Center. This year-round complex features a swimming pool, ice arena, gym and more. Take advantage a free parking at the sports center, or hop off the bus at the stop there. Walk behind the complex to find the free outdoor park which includes a large grassy field, tennis courts, sandy play area, and water park. Pack a lunch and spend the day relaxing in the sun with a view of WhistlerBlackcomb.
If you are looking for a little more adrenaline for your outside adventure, get into the alpine! We recommend the Via Ferrata tour with Mountain Skills Academy and Adventures. Via Ferrata is Italian for “iron way”. This is an engineered vertical pathway complete with steel cables and rungs to assist you to climb to the top. Your guide with help fit you with a climbing harness, helmet and special lanyard before you start your journey up the side of the mountain! Expect a four hour round trip outside adventure, but don’t worry, this trip is appropriate for beginners. Your guide will be there every step of the way to assist. You’ll stop to enjoy the view before descending via peak chair, or for the more adventurous, try glissading down Whistler Glacier.
Feel The Burn
If you want to find your own outside adventure on the mountain, try the Ascent Trails which take you from the base of Blackcomb Mountain to the top of Solar Coaster chair. This is an interconnected uphill hiking trail system with three sections. Starting off with the Little Burn, followed up by the Big Burn and finally the Heart Burn. If you complete all three sections you will have hiked 6.1 km with a total elevation gain of 1200 meters. Make sure to take a break at the Rendezvous Lodge at the top, you deserve a treat! We recommend a visit to Christine’s for one of their legendary Caesars. If you are a season’s pass holder then the ride down is free, but if not, make sure to buy a download ticket for $15 at the bottom before starting to hike!
For a more relaxed outside adventure, opt for the full sightseeing experience with a ride up the Whistler Mountain Gondola before heading over the Peak-to-Peak Gondola and taking in the views. You may even see some wildlife! Keep your eyes open when downloading on the Solar Coaster and Wizard Chair’s, black bears are known to munch on grassy fields below!
